Prepare to Revolt with Insurgent (Book Review)

Imagine gazing at a nice sculpture out of different pieces of whatever. But wait. Something's not right. Pieces of the sculpture begin to fall! They break away from the sculpture, one-by-one, until nothing is left but an unidentifiable piece of junk. A junk that was once so beautiful, until things started to fall apart. Now that was what happened in the world of Insurgent

  • Title: Insurgent
  • Author: Veronica Roth
  • Genre: science fiction, Dystopian
  • Pages: 525 pages
  • Series: The Divergent Series

"A CHOICE becomes a sacrifice.
  A SACRIFICE becomes a loss.
 A LOSS becomes a burden.
 A BURDEN becomes a battle.

One choice can destroy you."

Now hold your horses! I did not mean to say that the book was terrible. In fact, the book was a really good read. What I meant to say earlier is that the once happy world of Divergent (the previous book) starts to fall apart in this book, Insurgent. Problems become bigger, foes become more aggressive, and peace becomes less attainable in this book. Primarily because in this book is where the real war begins. What the ending of Divergent showed us is just the tip of the iceberg of the many problems that the Factions will face. I'm keeping my mouth shut for those who don't want spoilers. Let's just say that this book is filled with so much war and fights and misunderstandings, and deaths.  And I'd like to give great emphasis to "deaths" by the way. I mentioned in my last review that Divergent was quite the killer. And now I take it back after reading Insurgent. Let me put it this way: the deaths in Divergent were just an appetizer.

All these things falling apart in Insurgent doesn't make it a bad book. In fact, I liked it better than Divergent. Mainly because this is where the truth (or at least some of it) is revealed. And I got the sense that there is something that the protagonists are fighting for. And whatever that something is (I'm keeping my mouth shut) is really worth fighting for. This is also the book in which we get to know a lot more about the characters. Plus, Insurgent is filled with suspense and action and surprises that will guarantee broken "last-chapter-before-going-to-bed" promises and sleepless nights.

So if you have read Divergent, I recommend that you stop whatever you are doing right now and read Insurgent. I can promise you that it's a lot more different than Divergent, and better too, if you ask me. Ciao!

May the factions inspire you,
