IDENTITY CRISIS. HELP.

A Reflection

Is the "A Reflection" part too MMK? HAHAHA. I can't believe it's been 2 years since I first started blogging. And I most certainly can't believe that a whole year has passed since my first blogversary post! Time sure flies fast. The past year hasn't been very good in terms of how often I blog, but this past year had also been the one where I got to go to events such as book signings and book fairs, which are always fun. And I've met a lot of new people because of this blog, too; friends, fellow bloggers, and not to mention real-life authors themselves! Last August I got to go to my very first book signing where I met Alex London, then the next one came in November where I met Marie Lu, then February was when I met the James Frey, and just this Sunday I got to meet The Grisha Trilogy's Leigh Bardugo (blog post coming soon ;) )! And I won't forget to mention the friends I made during those events too, for sure. Thanks and you know who you are ;).

This past year had been hectic and busy, especially since I started college. Which leads me to my next agenda. I've been thinking about it lately... I thought I wasn't doing a good job keeping up with time when it comes to blogging regularly. Ever since I turned this blog into a solid book blog, I have been having trouble posting more often. All I ever thought about this blog being a book blog was posting book reviews. But since college started for me, finding reading time has been very very hard. I was able to read during the first semester, but I was pretty positive that I could do a better job during the second semester if I cut the reading... and I did.

Which led me to the question: How will my blog thrive now? My daily commutes are such a pain and are so boring that I can't help to think and observe things while commuting. And I have discovered that there are so much to talk about and share via blogging! Which led me to this thought: What if I start a series talking about stuff that goes on in my head, or in my life, whether book or not book related? I thought it would be a way to be more personal to my readers (don't worry Mom, I won't share any private and personal details!) and at the same time I could blog more regularly. Compared to the read-a-book > write-a-review > post-online process I'm doing, I could blog more often and at the same time release these insights that I get while, say, waiting at the MRT station, you know what I'm saying?

Which now leads me to my next question: If I do that, is this blog still a book blog? Or do I have to change it into something else again? This has been a problem of mine ever since I started blogging. I have a blog identity crisis. I adore books with a passion and they have a special place in my heart but I also have LOTS of other things to ramble about in my blog. Things that can't be easily put into one category. Should I make another blog? Or just change this blog? Or do something else? Or do nothing at all? Ugh, I hate not knowing what to do. Which is why here I am, rambling about it on the Internet, hoping that that clickbait title will get this post at least a handful of readers who can give me opinions on what I should do. So if you ever read this, comment whatever you want to say. Haha. Did you even understand everything I said? Haha. I literally just babbled on the Internet right now. I didn't even re-read this post. Haha.

If you have read up to this point, or even if you took the time to at least click this blog post of mine, I wish you every happiness and I wish that life will always be good to you. Once again, I raise my virtual champagne glass (filled with Sprite of course, I'm not legal yet haha) and propose a toast to remember and thank the blogging year that has passed and to this brand new year, I wish it would be full of great things for this blog! Cheers! *clink*

P.S. I'm planning on revamping my blog layout again. Just sayin'.

Event Alert: Leigh Bardugo Book Signing Event #LeighBardugoinPH

It's been a long time since I came around. Been a long time but I'm back in town...

HAHAHA I'M BACK! After two long months, I'm finally able to blog again! (for the next two months or so) Exciting! And to kickstart my return to blogging, I've come to inform you about the latest book signing news. Leigh Bardugo, the author of the Grisha Trilogy, is coming to Cebu and Manila for a book signing tour this June 20 and 21! (respectively) Here are the official details:
Taken from National Book Store's official Facebook Page.
Now I haven't actually read all the books yet and I'm still on the first book, Shadow and Bone, but I'm enjoying the first few chapters so far! I hope I could finish all books on time because I'm actually going to this book signing on June 21. So if you see me, don't be afraid to say ''hi''! Don't be afraid 'cause I will be afraid. Socially awkward penguin here, you get the idea HAHAHA.

The mechanics are still the same; only books purchased from National Book Store and PowerBooks are allowed to be signed. Refer to this link for the event's FAQs. I really really hope I get to sit on a chair this time and not end up sitting on the cold hard ground again. *wink**wink* But judging from the people going based on the event's official "Event" on Facebook, the chances are slim. 287 have selected "Going" as of this moment. So help me God. (This isn't blasphemy, I really am praying for a seat!)

See you there!
P.S. This is not a sponsored post and I am in NO way sponsored by National Book Store.

Book Review: Endgame: The Calling by James Frey and Nils Johnson-Shelton

Hello people of Earth! Sorry for taking so long but here it is! My review of James Frey's newest book of his newest series, and also the book that he promoted during his book signing here in the Philippines, Endgame: The Calling! One of the main things this book is about is puzzles so I decided to spice up this review by adding a puzzle of my own. You just have to solve some puzzles in order to continuously read this review. And I know that sounds like a lot of work so I'll just place the answers right next to the the puzzle. They're written in white font color so just highlight them with the cursor to see them or... whatever. Haha. So without further ado, let us begin!

  • Title: Endgame: The Calling
  • Author: James Frey and Nils Johnson-Shelton
  • Genre: young adult, fantasy, dystopia
  • Pages: 477 pages (hardbound)
  • Published: 7 October 2014
  • Series:  Endgame #1

"Twelve thousand years ago, they came. They descended from the sky amid smoke and fire, and created humanity and gave us rules to live by. They needed gold and they built our earliest civilizations to mine it for them. When they had what they needed, they left. But before they left, they told us someday they would come back, and when they did, a game would be played. A game that would determine our future.

This is Endgame.

For ten thousand years the lines have existed in secret. The 12 original lines of humanity. Each had to have a Player prepared at all times. They have trained generation after generation after generation. In weapons, languages, history, tactics, disguise assassination. Together the players are everything: strong, kind, ruthless, loyal, smart, stupid, ugly, lustful, mean, fickle, beautiful, calculating, lazy, exuberant, weak. They are good and evil. Like you. Like all.

This is Endgame.

When the game starts, the players will have to find three keys. The keys are somewhere on earth. The only rule of their Endgame is that there are no rules. Whoever finds the keys first wins the game. Endgame: The Calling is about the hunt for the first key. And just as it tells the story of the hunt for a hidden key, written into the book is a puzzle. It invites readers to play their own Endgame and to try to solve the puzzle. Whoever does will open a case filled with gold. Alongside the puzzle will be a revolutionary mobile game built by Google’s Niantic Labs that will allow you to play a real-world version of Endgame where you can join one of the lines and do battle with people around you.

Will exuberance beat strength? Stupidity top kindness? Laziness thwart beauty? Will the winner be good or evil? There is only one way to find out.

Play.
Survive.
Solve.
People of Earth.
Endgame has begun."

1. Character 344488833777|77774448999 (ANS: Diversity)

The first thing I loved about Endgame: The Calling is that it featured characters from all over the world. I could really see the culture in which these characters are from, which made me know their countries a little bit better. What was good about it too was that they weren't too stereotyped. Now let me head on to the next item before I accidentally "sound racist".

2. 9666777555394443|33 Setting (ANS: Worldwide)

Endgame was set in locations all over the world. It felt like an international field trip. There were many sights to see or on this case, read. 12 characters were moving around all over the globe and it really made the world look like such a small place to be in. One chapter they were in China, the next, they were in Iraq. Talk about a small world.

3. 333277778-72|22233|3 Reading (ANS: Fast-Paced)

One thing I loved about Endgame was that it wasn't such a snooze-off. I kept on turning pages because I always wanted to know what happens next. It kept me hooked with all its - you guessed it - twists and turns. And with more than 12 POV's, you'd might want to stay tuned to know what happens to each one of them. That's enough to get me hooked.

4. 2|2228444666|66-72|2225533|3 (ANS: Action-Packed)

Explosions? Check. Martial arts? Check. Poison dart-shooting Japanese girls? Check! Endgame was full of so much action, it almost felt like watching a movie! And before I move on to the final item, let's just set things straight. Can everyone who thinks it's just a Hunger Games rip-off cut the crap? BECAUSE IT'S NOT. There are 12 players, not 24. There's no Arena. No districts. No Capitol. Hunger Games =/= Endgame! But I do love both series!

5. 88667|77733|344422282|224445554448999 (ANS: Unpredictability)

The best thing about Endgame? Anything goes. You won't know what to expect. Plus, the POVs are written in such a way that you wouldn't root for anyone. Anyone could be your bet. That's why it is so unpredictable. Who'll go a step forward? Who'll die? Nothing's certain. And with 12+ POVs, each with different personalities and abilities, there's bound to be some unexpected alliances, traitors, and even love interests! I don't know about you but in my opinion, cliche's not on Endgame's vocabulary.

BONUS!

6. You could win 500,000 freaking dollars!

This is legit. There are puzzles hidden within Endgame, and the one who solves the puzzle will know the location of a certain key. This key will unlock a box located in some hotel in Vegas that's filled with $500,000 worth of gold coins! And from what I've heard, the sequels also have puzzles and prizes of their own, and the prizes increase in value with every sequel. How awesome is that? $500,000 could get me through college easy-breezy. Heck, $500,000 dollars could get my kids to college!

Therefore, I am giving Endgame: The Calling...

The only thing I disliked about Endgame was that I had a hard time figuring out who people were since I was confused by the 12+ names in the book. Haha. But I thought it was great, and I can't wait for the next book. If you enjoy those things listed above, give Endgame a shot! Happy reading!

P.S. The puzzle can be solved with the help of a cellphone keypad. Knowhumsayn? ;D

I'm Quitting Blogging

I'm afraid it has all come to this. I've been thinking of it for quite a while now and I've finally made my decision. As sad as it seems...

...you've been fooled. Happy April Fools! I'm not quitting this blog! Just wanted to update this blog of mine for my faithful readers (Mom, Dad, some relatives I guess) since I haven't updated for a whole freaking month! I would like to apologize for it, really. I've been more focused in school this semester and that means substituting reading time with studying time. No books read = no reviews. Plus I haven't been able to save up for some book money since the MRT took a massive fare hike. Bummer. But fear not because there's only two months of this sem left and after that, I'm off to blogging mode! But right now, nu-uh. I do have a book review coming up but I'm afraid that's gonna be pretty much it for book reviews until May. I do have some blog post ideas but it's not going to be book reviews this time. I hope you like it though!

OH YEAH, I now have a Bookstagram account! If you're into book photography or whatnot, give me a follow! @JudeReadsBlog I'll also be posting some updates about the blog there, so follow away if you want!

So that's it for now! Have a blessed Holy Week, or normal week, or whatever!
